When Heated Seats Go Wrong: A Melted Fuse Box and a Near-Fire
Every so often a truck comes through the door that reminds us why the boring details matter. Wire gauge. Circuit loads. The right fuse in the right place. This was one of those.
Came in for a dead battery that wouldn't stay charged. Classic parasitic draw. Something was pulling current with the key off. We started chasing it, and the trail didn't lead where we expected. It led to a set of heated seats a previous shop had put in.
Here's what they did. Heated seats pull real current. Instead of running them on a properly sized, properly protected circuit, they tapped into one that was never meant to carry that load. Physics did the rest. The circuit ran hot, and the fuse and holder melted. Not blew. Melted. Deformed plastic, scorched terminals, the whole assembly cooked itself under the dash.
That's the part that gets you. A melted fuse holder isn't just a dead circuit. It's heat, in a tight space, surrounded by wiring, carpet, and foam. This was a genuinely sketchy, one-bad-day-from-a-fire situation. And the damaged connection was leaking current with the truck off, which was the parasitic draw killing the battery in the first place.
We pulled the old wiring out and did it right. Correct gauge wire, a dedicated and properly fused circuit, clean connections, and a relay so the load isn't hanging off something with no business carrying it. Battery drain gone. Fire hazard gone.
The point here isn't don't add heated seats. Heated seats are great, and it's a reasonable upgrade. The point is anything that draws serious current has to be wired to match it. Old trucks reward attention and punish shortcuts. A shortcut on a job like this doesn't cost you a battery. It can cost you the truck.
